What is a dyslexia assessment?
Our specialist teacher-assessors conduct a series of standardised tests. This then provides a profile of your child's underlying cognitive profile (looking at areas such as processing and memory) and their literacy skills. Your child's profile will then be analysed to see if it fits the definition of dyslexia.
After the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive report which details your child's strengths and difficulties. This can help your child to understand the difficulties they are experiencing and offers recommendations to help to focus your child's continuing literacy development.
If appropriate, the assessment can provide a diagnosis of dyslexia, and due to our qualifications, this remains valid throughout your child's education. However, it is important to note that the assessment can be inconclusive - this usually happens if the results from the assessment do not provide a clear picture of dyslexia, but this does not match the background information provided. In this case, the report would still provide a comprehensive overview of your child's profile and appropriate recommendations.
What is a dyscalculia assessment?
Dyscalculia is a difficulty with number sense which impacts on development of understanding in maths. There are multiple potential reasons for maths difficulties, therefore a dyscalculia assessment begins with the same exploration of the underlying cognitive profile as a dyslexia assessment. This is then followed by a comprehensive assessment of maths skills.
What is a combined assessment?
If you are concerned that your child might have both dyslexia and dyscalculia, it is possible to complete a combined assessment, which would take place across two sessions.
Dyslexia in itself can impact on maths. Some of the difficulties associated with dyslexia include difficulties with working memory and processing speed. This can make it harder to retain times tables and maths methods, to process written maths questions and to calculate at speed. In a combined assessment, the dyslexia assessment will take place first along with an initial maths test. Your child's approach to the initial maths test can sometimes be enough to see that, rather than dyscalculia, their maths is being impacted by processing difficulties. If number-sense difficulties are seen in this initial test, then the full maths assessment can be carried out to explore the possibility of dyscalculia.
What does an assessment involve?
Your child will complete a number of standardised tests. The tests involve puzzles, word games and some reading and writing.
The length of the assessment varies depending upon the child's age, the speed at which they move through tasks and the breaks they need; assessments usually take between three and four hours.
The assessment will take place in your home or in the child's school if they are able to provide a quiet space to work.

This includes travel to the venue, the full assessment, a comprehensive report and a follow up meeting to discuss the report.
